Dr. Debanshu Roy is a clinician and health economist and has worked extensively in the health domain across policy and strategy projects . He has supported state governments and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Through this talk, he helps us envisage the future trends for healthcare in India. Every health service delivered in the country through public as well as private providers, will optimally be part of a digital ecosystem. Each citizen is envisioned to have a Health ID number and all providers will connect their health services to this number.
Discussing three dimensions of this ecosystem, he proposes Health as an Identity, as a Public Responsibility and as a Fundamental Right. A Health ID would identify and classify individuals based on health status. While the ID would be consent regulated, health is also a public responsibility and a collaborative effort. Dr. Debanshu also emphasizes how Health as a public responsibility extends as a perspective in urban planning. While talking about the third dimension, he clarifies that Health is an essential aspect of our right to life, but it isn’t a fundamental right.
Health as an identity possesses massive benefits to citizens, exposing a wide pool of opportunities in the health sector. It can act as a powerful tool, combining all health-based information under one roof. In case of medical emergencies, it can summarise the most critical medical history information and save precious time. It can potentially optimise better insurance premiums, provided a good health credit rating is maintained. The National Health Digital Mission (NHDM) has been set up by the Government of India to take a step in the direction of creating a digital ecosystem which can enable such use cases.
He leaves us to ponder upon what we would build in the future with all these 3 dimensions and how that would help us innovate in the future.
